巨人隊總教練Bruce Bochy宣布國聯分區系列賽第2戰先發投手，並不是王牌投手Madison Bumgarner，而是「鯊魚」Jeff Samardzija，他要對決老東家小熊隊。
國聯外卡資格賽，Bumgarner一夫當關，完封9局，但是為了讓他休養，巨人隊改由第3戰再推出他先發。
巨人隊不愧是老經驗的球隊，連第4戰要推誰都想好了，左投Matt Moore已經準備好了。
「我不去特別猜測總教練的決定，他總是神機妙算，我只要帶著信心，並且避免讓他失望。」Samardzija說。
不過雙數年的巨人隊的確在季後賽令人畏懼，即便是今年超過百勝的小熊隊也不好打。
Samardzija2006年被小熊隊選中，2014年短期轉戰運動家又回小熊，去年待在白襪，本季他12勝11敗，防禦率3.81。
他說：「小熊隊現在有很多年輕人，都是在我之前沒看過的，這是季後賽，不管你為誰打，你必須要有好的團隊，好的先發陣容，還有好的牛棚。」

馬林魚隊鈴木一朗4局下率先從道奇隊先發投手前田健太手中敲出安打，帶起攻勢，終場馬林魚3比0擊敗道奇，前田健太吞敗投（14勝9敗）。
此戰4局下馬林魚隊1出局之後，鈴木一朗率先敲出安打，這是他大聯盟生涯的第3022支安打，接著Martin Prado、Christian Yelich連敲安打，先攻得1分，Justin Bour打出高飛犧牲打，送回第2分。6局下則是Prado、Yelich連續安打，加上游擊手Corey Seager的守備失誤，再攻下1分。
前田健太先發6局被擊出8支安打失3分、2分責失，三振3次、保送2次。前3局前田健太雖然沒失分，但他認為自己前3局也沒有投的很好，而且對方球員確實表現很好，整場比賽他的感覺都不是很好。
馬林魚隊能贏球，還有一個大功臣，就是先發投手Jose Urena，投8.2局只被打出4支安打沒失分，三振4次、沒保送，精采拿下勝投（4勝6敗），A.J. Ramos投2球解決最後一名打者Seager，本季第34次救援成功。
馬林魚隊贏了這場比賽，戰績71勝72敗，仍在國家聯盟東區排名第三，道奇隊80勝62敗，在國聯西區排名第一。
